Some Civil Servants are just like my loved ones

Now that President Obama has his dream job, I should really start thinking about finding one of my own.

I've never had a job that I've really loved or been devoted to. I can't imagine what such a job would be either.

It dawned on me recently that I have a commitment problem when it comes to choosing a career. In that way I'm not so much different than my single friends who have their own issues with committing.

Consider the evidence:

1. I'm picky. I don't want just any job where I mentally punch in, punch out and have to put forth very little effort.

2. I have unreasonably high expectations. I want to love the job and the job to love me back. I also want good benefits, a lot of vacation time, and to not have to feel guilty when I take time off to hang with my kids.

3. I'm in a long-term (going on three years now) relationship with a gig that doesn't pay me anything.

I could really use an employment yenta.

You have to compromise eventually. Prioritize your wish list and find something that meets the first item. If you're really lucky, you'll find a job that meets the first couple items. I'm guessing even Barack Obama would like "more time with his family" and "no constant threat of assassination," but you know, you can't have everything.

Have you considered media & marketing director for a non-profit performing arts foundation with a boss who was a single mom and is unreasonably understanding when it comes to childcare issues. ;-) Oh, that's my job. I'm sure there's an equivalent in Buffalo at Studio Arena or Shea's.

Librarian! Librarian!

Okay, I am biased. But I do LOVE my job, still, nearly a year later (which is totally new for me). I have great vacation time and can theoretically hang with my kid a decent amount. Though I have been surprised at the amount of work (maybe if I weren't in a tenure-track job it would be less?), at least I can do some of it at home and am only at the library 9-5 most days.

Okay, I'll shut up now. :)

I completely understand you... every day at my last job I kept trying to motivate myself to find a new job - one that I cared out. But I was to lazy. Now I am stuck back just trying to find A job.

I agree - the domestice engineer position pays shit, but has great perks, although it is a thankless job.....let me know if you make any headway - I'll go with you to see if they have a spot for me too

Since no one else has applied, may I be your employment yenta?.. Or am I part of the problem?

I think you should be a full-time blogger. Why not? I'd read your (other) blog.
